Every day, we step out of our homes in pursuit of work, education, business, or other responsibilities. Yet, as Muslims, we are taught that no journey whether long or short should begin without placing our trust in Allah. The Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) provides us with a powerful supplication that seeks Allah's protection, guidance, and blessings before leaving home.
The Sunnah Dua Before Leaving Home
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Bismillāh, tawakkaltu 'alā Allāh, lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.
Translation:
"In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah."
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that when a person recites this supplication upon leaving home, it is said to him:
"You have been guided, protected, and sufficed." Then the devils withdraw from him, and one devil says to another, "How can you influence a person who has been guided, protected, and sufficed?"(Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi)
Whether one is traveling to work, attending school, embarking on a journey, or simply running daily errands, this supplication serves as a reminder that every step should begin with faith and reliance upon Allah.
Making this dua a daily habit reminds us that while we may plan our day, only Allah controls its outcome. By entrusting our affairs to Him, we acknowledge our dependence on His mercy, protection, and guidance.
