Why Should You Never Lose Hope in Allah?

Have you ever found yourself making du‘a’ about something for so long that you begin to wonder when Allah will answer you? Perhaps you have been searching for a job, praying for a successful business, hoping for a righteous spouse, asking Allah to ease a family difficulty or struggling to overcome a personal challenge. You make du‘a’ today, tomorrow and even after your obligatory prayers, yet your situation seems unchanged.

Sometimes, disappointment creeps in, and you begin to wonder whether things will ever get better. But here is something every believer should remember: your circumstances may change, your plans may fail and people may disappoint you, but you should never lose hope in Allah.

In Islam, this beautiful quality is known as Raja’ (الرجاء), which means hope, particularly the hope of receiving Allah's mercy, forgiveness, assistance and reward. It is more than simply wishing for something good to happen; it is a condition of the heart that encourages a believer to worship Allah, continue making du‘a’, perform good deeds and trust Him even when the outcome is not yet visible.

Hope is one of the things that gives meaning to our worship. Think about someone who wakes up early for Tahajjud, observes voluntary fasting, gives charity or makes an effort to improve their relationship with Allah. What encourages them to continue? Among other things, it is the hope of receiving Allah's reward, attaining His pleasure and eventually entering Jannah. When we stand for Salah, we hope that Allah will accept it. When we give charity, we hope that He will reward us. When we resist temptation, we hope that He will compensate us with something better. This hope makes worship more meaningful and encourages us to continue doing good, even when it requires sacrifice.

Hope also reminds us that we are constantly in need of Allah. Imagine someone who has exhausted every reasonable means of solving a problem. They have spoken to people, made plans and tried different solutions, but nothing seems to work. At such a moment, they realise that human ability has limitations, while Allah's power has no limitations. People may assist us, wealth may provide comfort and connections may open opportunities, but none of these replaces our need for Allah. This is the essence of 'Ubudiyyah (العبودية), our servitude and complete dependence upon Him. A believer places ultimate hope in Allah rather than allowing the heart to become excessively attached to worldly circumstances or other people.

Allah says:

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ

"And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'" (Qur'an 40:60)

This verse reminds us to turn to Allah with humility and hope, recognising that we cannot do without Him.

Another beautiful effect of hope is that it increases our gratitude and love for Allah. Consider someone who has been unemployed for months. They continue applying for opportunities, improving their skills and asking Allah for assistance. Eventually, an opportunity comes, and they secure a job they had been praying for. What should follow such a blessing? Gratitude. They recognise that although they made efforts, their provision ultimately came through Allah's permission and generosity. Even while waiting, hope keeps the believer connected to Allah through prayer, remembrance and supplication. It also protects the heart from unhealthy dependence on people. We appreciate those who help us, but we understand that people are limited and may disappoint us. Allah, however, is never in need of His creation.

This brings us to another important aspect of hope: du‘a’. Have you ever wondered why someone continues making supplication even when they have not yet seen the answer? It is because du‘a’ is an expression of hope. When you raise your hands and ask Allah for forgiveness, provision, guidance, protection or success, you demonstrate your belief that He hears you and has the power to grant what you seek.

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) beautifully explains this relationship between hope and supplication:

"The basis of du‘a’ is hope. If the person making du‘a’ did not hope for his request to be granted, he would not make du‘a’."

Hope should not be restricted to matters of the Hereafter. We should also ask Allah for our everyday needs, whether they appear significant or small. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a believer should ask Allah for their needs, even something as ordinary as a sandal strap when it breaks. This teaching is reported in Jāmi‘ at-Tirmidhi. It reminds us that our connection with Allah should not be limited to moments of tragedy or overwhelming difficulty. Ask Him when you need a job, when you are making an important decision, when you are struggling financially, when you need guidance and even when you desire something seemingly insignificant.

However, having hope in Allah does not mean abandoning effort and simply waiting for things to happen. A student must still study, a business owner must fulfil their responsibilities, and someone searching for employment must take reasonable steps towards finding work. True hope goes hand in hand with effort, patience and reliance upon Allah. We take lawful means, do what is within our ability and leave the outcome to Him. If things do not happen as expected, we remember that our knowledge is limited while Allah's wisdom is perfect.

Allah says:

لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ

"Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. (Qur'an 39:53)

This is a powerful reminder that no matter how difficult our circumstances become, we should never despair of Allah's mercy. Perhaps you have been waiting for something for a long time. Perhaps you have made mistakes and feel unworthy of forgiveness. Perhaps life has not unfolded according to your expectations. Do not allow disappointment to disconnect your heart from Allah. Continue worshipping Him, seeking His forgiveness, making du‘ā’ and doing good.

Remember that hope in Allah is not simply about receiving everything we desire. It is about trusting His mercy, seeking His pleasure and recognising that His wisdom is greater than our understanding. Sometimes, the greatest blessing is receiving exactly what we asked for. At other times, it is being protected from something we never knew would harm us.

So, never allow a delayed answer to make you abandon your du‘a’. Never allow people's disappointment to make you forget Allah, and never allow your past mistakes to convince you that His mercy is beyond your reach.

Keep hoping in Allah, continue striving towards what is good, and let your heart remain attached to your Creator.

May Allah fill our hearts with sincere hope in Him, grant us the strength to worship Him consistently, answer our beneficial supplications, forgive our shortcomings and never allow us to despair of His mercy. Amin.
