All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, who revealed the Qur’an as a source of guidance, mercy, healing, and light for mankind. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his companions, and all those who follow his guidance until the Last Day.
The recitation of the Qur’an is among the greatest acts of worship. Every letter recited from the Book of Allah carries immense reward, and regularly engaging with the Qur’an strengthens faith, brings tranquility to the heart, and draws a believer closer to Allah. Allah says:
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright.” (Surah Al-Isrā’ 17:9)
Among the chapters of the Qur’an that Muslims are encouraged to recite is Surah Al-Kahf, particularly on Friday, due to the special virtue mentioned in the Prophetic traditions.
With this in mind, we would like to know your understanding and practice regarding the recitation of Surah Al-Kahf.
Question:
Is Friday the only day on which Surah Al-Kahf can be recited, or can it also be recited on other days of the week?
Answer:
Surah Al-Kahf can be recited at any time, and it is not restricted to Friday. However, there is a special virtue mentioned for reciting it on Friday. The Prophet ﷺ said:
مَنْ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْكَهْفِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ، أَضَاءَ لَهُ مِنَ النُّورِ مَا بَيْنَ الْجُمُعَتَيْنِ
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays.”
This narration has been reported from Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri رضي الله عنه and authenticated by a number of scholars.
Therefore, a Muslim is encouraged to recite Surah Al-Kahf from Thursday evening after Maghrib until Friday evening at Maghrib, as this is the period regarded as Friday in the Islamic calendar. However, if someone recites it on another day, there is nothing wrong with that, and he will still receive the general reward of reciting the Qur’an.
Thus, Friday is not the only day on which Surah Al-Kahf may be recited; rather, it is the day for which a special virtue of its recitation has been reported. A believer should strive to recite the Qur’an regularly throughout the week while giving special attention to Surah Al-Kahf on Friday.
And Allah knows best.
