Sometimes, we become so occupied with what is missing from our lives that we forget to appreciate what Allah has already given us.
We complain about the money we have not made, the opportunities we have not received, the goals we have not achieved, and the lives we wish we could live. We look at other people's successes and quietly wonder why our own journey seems slower. In the process, we overlook the countless blessings that surround us every single day.
But take a moment to reflect: What if some of the things you take for granted today are the very things someone else is desperately praying for?
Someone is praying for the good health you wake up with every morning. Someone wishes they could return home to the family you sometimes complain about. Someone is searching for a job while you are tired of yours. Someone is longing for another day of life, while you are worried about what tomorrow will bring.
This does not mean your struggles are insignificant. Your worries are real, your disappointments matter, and your unanswered prayers can be painful. Gratitude does not require you to pretend that life is perfect. Rather, it teaches you to recognize that even in an imperfect life, there are still reasons to thank Allah.
Allah says in the Qur'an:
Ù„َئِÙ† Ø´َÙƒَرْتُÙ…ْ Ù„َØ£َزِيدَÙ†َّÙƒُÙ…ْ
If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more.(Qur'an 14:7)
Notice that gratitude is not merely about saying Alhamdulillah with the tongue. It is also about recognizing blessings with the heart and using them in ways that please Allah. Your health can be a means of worship, your knowledge can benefit others, your wealth can support those in need, and your time can be invested in good deeds.
Consider someone who has spent years praying for an opportunity to earn a living. When the opportunity finally comes, the demands of work may become exhausting. They may begin to complain about the responsibilities they once begged Allah to grant them. This is a reminder of how easily familiarity can make us forget the value of our blessings.
The same happens with family, friendship, education, and even the ordinary comfort of sleeping peacefully and waking up safely. We often recognize the value of these blessings only when they are threatened or lost.
The Prophet Muhammad (ï·º) said:
“Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for this is more suitable so that you do not belittle the blessings of Allah upon you.” (Sahih Muslim, 2963)
This Prophetic guidance offers a powerful remedy for constant dissatisfaction. When we measure our lives only against those who have more wealth, greater achievements, or better opportunities, we may never feel that we have enough. There will always be someone ahead of us in one area or another.
But when we learn to appreciate what we have while continuing to work towards what we hope to achieve, our hearts become less consumed by envy and more grounded in gratitude.
Perhaps you have not purchased the house you dream of. Perhaps your business is still growing, your career has not advanced as quickly as you expected, or your prayers have not been answered in the way you imagined. Continue to strive, make du'a, and trust Allah's wisdom. Your current circumstances do not erase the blessings already present in your life.
You can desire more without despising what you have. You can pursue success without becoming ungrateful. You can pray for a better tomorrow while thanking Allah for bringing you through today.
At the end of the day, we may not have everything we want, but we should never become so blinded by what we lack that we forget the One who has sustained us.
So, the next time you feel overwhelmed by life's shortcomings, pause and count your blessings. Remember the difficulties Allah has helped you overcome, the moments of relief you once prayed for, and the countless favors you may never fully recognize.
Say Alhamdulillah not because everything is perfect, but because Allah's blessings remain worthy of gratitude even when life is difficult.
May Allah make us among His grateful servants, protect our hearts from envy and constant dissatisfaction, bless what we have, grant us what is good for us, and make us content with His decree. Amin.
