Can I Rub Water Over a Dry Spot on My Foot During Wudu?

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, who has prescribed purification for His servants and made wudu a means of preparing ourselves for prayer and other acts of worship. May peace and blessings of Allah be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his family, his Companions, and all those who follow his guidance until the Last Day.

Wudu is an important act of purification in Islam, and Allah has clearly instructed believers to wash specific parts of the body before prayer. Among these are the feet, which must be washed up to and including the ankles.

Allah says:

“O you who believe, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles.” (Surah Al-Mā’idah 5:6)

Because the validity of wuḍūʾ depends on the required areas being washed, a question may arise when a person notices that a small part of the foot remained dry during wuḍūʾ.

Question

If a small part of my foot was dry during wudu, can I wet it with my hand using the water already on my foot?

Answer

Yes. If you notice that a small part of your foot has remained dry while you are still performing wudu, you should ensure that water reaches the dry area.

The important point is that actual water must reach the dry spot. If there is sufficient water or wetness on your foot and you use your wet hand to spread that water onto the small dry area, causing the area to become properly wet, this can suffice.

However, simply rubbing the dry area with a hand that has only a trace of moisture, without transferring enough water to make the area wet, would not fulfil the requirement of washing that part.

Therefore, if you discover a small dry spot while performing wuḍūʾ, the safest and simplest approach is to put some water on your hand and rub the dry area until the water reaches it properly. There is no need to pour a large quantity of water; what matters is that the required part is actually washed.

For example, if you have washed your foot and then notice that a small portion near the side, heel, or between the toes remained dry, you can wet your hand and rub that particular area. You do not need to repeat the entire wuḍūʾ merely because of such a small missed spot, provided you correct it appropriately while the wuḍūʾ is still in progress.

The Prophet ﷺ also emphasised the importance of ensuring that water reaches all the required parts of the body during purification.

Thus, the essential requirement is not the amount of water used but whether the water reaches the area that must be washed.

If you are unsure whether the area actually became wet, it is better to add a little water and rub it properly rather than rely on mere dampness.

In Summary

A small dry spot on the foot should not simply be ignored. If you notice it during wuḍūʾ, make sure water reaches the area. You may use your wet hand to spread existing water onto it if enough water is actually transferred to wet the spot. Otherwise, use a small amount of fresh water and rub the area until it is properly wet.

Islam encourages cleanliness and purification without extravagance. A small amount of water is sufficient when it properly reaches the required area.

And Allah knows best.
